VinUniversity and University Grenoble Alpes join hands to develop a new generation of AI systems for “Smart Life Smart Living”

Assistant Professor Hieu Pham, Director of the Computer Vision and Medical AI Lab (College of Engineering and Computer Science, VinUni–Illinois Smart Health Center, VinUniversity), in collaboration with Professor Nicolas Vuillerme (Université Grenoble Alpes and Institut Universitaire de France, France) and colleagues from the Instituto Nacional de Telecomunicações (Inatel, Brazil), has been awarded a research grant from the MIAI Grenoble Alpes Institute (France) to develop a new generation of AI systems for Smart Healthcare and Smart Living.

The funded project, titled “AI by People and for People,” focuses on developing a new generation of artificial intelligence (AI) systems for “Smart Life, Smart Living.” It aims to foster international, interdisciplinary, and translational activities across research, education, and innovation in AI.

The research team is driven by the belief that AI represents one of the most significant societal transformations since the emergence of the digital age. With the ability to be integrated into countless processes and devices, AI has the potential to exponentially enhance efficiency and deliver meaningful, real-world impact. From reshaping industries to influencing everyday life, AI is rapidly transforming how societies function and interact.

As part of this initiative, a multidisciplinary team of scientists from VinUniversity, Université Grenoble Alpes, and Inatel will collaborate to design and develop novel AI models with applications in key areas, including smart cities, precision medicine, and education. These efforts aim to address complex global challenges while ensuring that AI technologies remain human-centered, ethical, and accessible.

In addition to its research objectives, the project places strong emphasis on capacity building and talent development. It will support the co-training of graduate students across partner institutions, fostering a new generation of globally minded researchers equipped to lead future advancements in AI.

The project will also actively promote postgraduate education by implementing co-supervision mechanisms for research trainees at multiple levels, including research assistants (RAs), Master’s students, and PhD candidates. This integrated training approach will strengthen academic collaboration, enhance research quality, and provide students with international exposure and interdisciplinary expertise.

Overall, the expected outcomes of the project extend beyond scientific discovery to include the development of new medical datasets, advanced AI models, and high-quality scientific publications in leading international venues, thereby contributing to both academic excellence and real-world impact.
